What size do you need for a changing table or dresser?
- Measure the top. The mat must sit fully on the surface and must not overhang the edge.
- The standard size is about 70 × 50 cm (e.g. Leander Matty 70 × 50 cm, Shnuggle Squishy 69 × 45 cm), so you need a surface at least that big.
- On a dresser, check the depth. If it is shallower than the mat, choose a narrower mat or a changing top that attaches to the dresser.
- On a changing table with a rim, choose a mat that fits the inner dimensions so it doesn't slide.
- The height should let you change without bending, which saves your back over many changes a day.
Materials
PU (polyurethane) foam
Firm, keeps its shape and feels pleasant. PU foam mats often have a waterproof surface, so no extra cover is needed.
Foam with fabric cover
Softer and warmer to the touch, but the cover needs regular washing. Many parents combine a waterproof mat with a thin towel or muslin on top.
PVC
Waterproof, affordable and easy to wipe.
Cleaning and hygiene
- After every change wipe the mat with a damp cloth.
- Disinfect as the manufacturer advises. Leander allows an alcohol-based disinfectant applied to a cloth (not directly to the mat) for Matty, while Shnuggle recommends water and soap for Squishy and advises against alcohol-based cleaners.
- Fabric covers should be washed according to the care label.
- Replace the mat if the surface is cracked or the foam no longer holds its shape.
Safe nappy changing
- Never leave your baby alone on a changing table, not even for a second.
- Get everything ready beforehand so one hand is always on your baby.
- Raised sides keep your baby in the middle but do not prevent falls.
- Place the mat on a stable, flat surface with a non-slip base.
- The NHS advises changing your baby on a changing mat on the floor, the safest option once your baby starts rolling.
Changing on the go
For walks and visits, pack a thin travel mat in a changing backpack or changing bag. Disposable pads add protection on public changing tables.
